Successful launch of the cross-border Interreg project “Cross-Prehab”

The EU project “Cross-Prehab”, in which a prehabilitation program for knee and hip replacement surgery preparation is being implemented, aims to intensify cooperation between Lower Austria and Slovakia. The kick-off event, which marks the beginning of a promising cooperation, took place on October 18, 2024 at the Lower Austrian Health Care Agency in St. Pölten. The promotion of cross-border cooperation in the health and social sector represents a significant step towards improving local healthcare. By sharing experiences and networking, new potential for innovation can be tapped into.

“The ‘Cross-Prehab’ Interreg project presented reflects very well the strategic focus that we pursue as the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft. It embodies the principle of ‘Science for Society’ through cross-border international cooperation for the benefit of Lower Austria as a research and health location and its neighboring regions. This competitive international cooperation project is a clear demonstration of excellence in translational research. It networks and strengthens the innovative power of our region and at the same time makes a valuable contribution to scientific progress,” emphasized Karine Köhrer, responsible program manager at the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft.

“Cross-Prehab” focuses on rehabilitation before surgery by preparing patients for upcoming knee and hip replacement surgery through a comprehensive program of information, training and pain management. This approach emphasizes the biopsychosocial aspects of prehabilitation to enable faster recovery and an improved quality of life for patients. Previous studies have shown that different preoperative measures can have a positive influence on healing, but the “Cross-Prehab” project goes one step further: it integrates scientific findings, clinical experience and practical implementation by the project partners. By focusing on the individual needs of patients and a comprehensive prehabilitation program, the aim is not only to improve the clinical course of operations, but also to increase the efficiency of treatments. A special feature of “Cross-Prehab” is the close cooperation between the healthcare facilities and experts from Lower Austria and Slovakia. This cross-border cooperation not only strengthens regional healthcare, but also contributes to improving the quality of life of patients undergoing these invasive orthopaedic surgical procedures.

The guests attending the kick-off event were able to gain a comprehensive overview of the project’s objectives and benefits. After the intensive exchange of experiences during the kick-off event, everyone can look forward to the planning of the next project activities and project implementation.
